Gas Continuous Flow to Heat Pump Hot Water Upgrade

This customer wanted to replace their gas continuous-flow hot water system and use the electricity generated by their solar panels more effectively. After researching the available options, they selected a Reclaim Energy 400L stainless steel split-system heat pump.

Having previously used a Reclaim system at another property, the customer was already familiar with the brand’s performance and reliability. The upgrade also supported their transition to an all-electric home, enabling the removal of the remaining gas appliances.

Why Replace Gas Hot Water With a Heat Pump?

A heat pump hot water system uses electricity to transfer heat from the surrounding air into the storage tank. When scheduled to operate during periods of strong solar generation, it can help a household use more of the electricity produced by its rooftop solar system.

Changing from gas continuous flow to a heat pump requires careful planning. Before selecting a system, consider the household’s hot water demand, available installation space, electrical requirements, existing plumbing, and preferred operating schedule.

The Hot Water Man provides professional heat pump hot water installations across the Mornington Peninsula, Frankston and Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs.

Reclaim 400L Split-System Installation

For this installation, a Reclaim Energy system with a 400 L Australian-made stainless-steel storage tank was selected. Its larger storage capacity provides additional hot water for times when family members or guests are staying at the property.

The split-system design separates the storage tank from the heat pump unit, providing greater flexibility when determining where each component can be installed.

The system’s controller can also be programmed to operate at selected times. This allows the customer to schedule water heating around their household requirements and available solar generation.

Quiet and Efficient Operation

The Reclaim condenser operates at approximately 37 dB, making it one of the quieter heat pump units Geoff has installed.

The system also uses Reclaim’s “top-down” heating method, which heats the water at the top of the storage tank first. If the household uses the available hot water, this design can provide a smaller quantity of usable hot water without waiting for the entire tank to reheat.

The system uses CO₂ as its refrigerant and may qualify for applicable hot water rebates. Eligibility and rebate values can vary, so confirm them during the quotation and installation process.

Considering a Gas-to-Heat-Pump Upgrade?

The Hot Water Man can assess your existing gas hot water system, household requirements, solar generation and available installation space before recommending a suitable replacement.
