Heat Pump Rebates

and Government Incentives

There are up to 3 government rebates which we can potentially claim on your behalf.   This reduces the total cost of your heat pump hot water system and installation.  These rebate amounts change regularly.

We can apply for these rebates on your behalf and offer the amounts as a price reduction on the total cost of the job.

Use your rebates wisely; you cannot claim them again in a couple of years because you made a poor choice with a pop-up company and an inferior product.

Clean Energy Regulator – STCs

STC Rebate

STC’s are a Federal Government rebate. The good news about this rebate is that if you install a heat pump hot water you will qualify for a rebate amount, that is only dependent on which brand and model you install.

STC’s are used as a way to meet renewable energy targets and reduce carbon emissions. They make renewable energy systems more accessible and attractive.

When you install an eligible renewable energy system, you earn a certain number of STCs.

The average amount of this rebate is approximately $800.

Victorian Energy Upgrades

VEEC Rebate

The Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) program offers incentives for households to upgrade to efficient hot water systems. Only products meeting the VEU program requirements can be installed under this program.  This is commonly called the VEEC rebate.

VEEC rebate amounts vary depending if the system you are replacing is common storage electric or gas. Existing solar hot water systems now qualify subject to conditions*.

The amount of this rebate is approximately $675 when replacing storage electric and $450 when replacing gas hot water.

*To be eligible for VEEC’s, the solar system must be at least 5 years old and must have non-functioning components.

Solar Victoria – Heat Pump Rebate

Means Tested

As a Victorian householder, you could receive a hot water rebate if you meet the following criteria:

  • you’re the owner-occupier of an existing property where the system is to be installed
  • the combined household taxable income of all owners is less than $150,000 per year
  • the property is valued at under $3 million
  • the property address has not previously received a hot water rebate or a solar battery rebate under the Solar Homes Program
  • the hot water system to be replaced is at least three years old from the date of purchase.

This rebate is $1000.

How heat pumps work

A heat pump hot water system is a different style of electric storage hot water system. It uses the heat from the surrounding air and doesn’t rely on direct sunlight to heat your water and provides a reliable, efficient and sustainable way to reduce your water heating energy consumption.

It uses refrigeration technology and works similar to a normal split system air conditioner, however instead of heating the air, it heats the water.

Some systems also have back up conventional elements to assist in water heating in the event of cold weather where the ambient air temperatures are low.

Many heat pumps have controls that can be set by the customer or installer so that the heating periods are set to suit household power generation or day/off peak metering.

Heat pump materials

Heat pumps use a storage tank, these are mainly constructed out of steel and have a lining such as vitreous enamel. Some tanks can also be manufactured out of stainless steel.

Choosing a heat pump

We can help you understand your water heating requirements and choose the ideal system to meet your needs, catering for budget, energy efficiency and environment (how much space you have).

We generally like to use heat pumps that have a high Australian manufactured content as we like to support Australian manufacturers.

They also provide local product service, parts, training and rebates are kept in Australia.

Heat Pump Mechanics

Heat-pump hot water systems harness the principles of refrigeration cycles to extract heat from the surrounding air. This heat is then transferred to water within an insulated storage cylinder through a heat exchanger. The energy efficiency of these systems is impressive, consuming approximately 60 to 75% less electricity compared to conventional electric hot water systems. Unlike the direct heating mechanism employed by traditional electric systems, heat pumps employ electricity to power the heat pump itself, which then heats the water indirectly.

Sun-Powered Efficiency: A Kinship with Solar Heaters

An interesting analogy emerges when considering heat-pump hot water systems and solar water heaters. Both systems harness the sun’s energy, albeit in different ways. Heat-pump systems derive heat from the air, which is ultimately warmed by the sun. Unlike solar systems, heat pumps don’t rely on electric or gas boosters, utilizing electricity solely for operating the evaporator fan and compressor during water heating. This distinction positions heat-pump systems as efficient alternatives to solar heaters.

Solar Victoria – Heat Pump Rebate

Means Tested

As a Victorian householder, you could receive a hot water rebate if you meet the following criteria:

  • you’re the owner-occupier of an existing property where the system is to be installed
  • the combined household taxable income of all owners is less than $210,000 per year
  • the property is valued at under $3 million
  • the property address has not previously received a hot water rebate or a solar battery rebate under the Solar Homes Program
  • the hot water system to be replaced is at least three years old from the date of purchase.

This rebate is $1000.

The rebates are added together to calculate the total deduction in the cost of the heat pump installation.

Note: The calculations were based on installing a Rheem HDC-270 (model 551270) Heat Pump. Installation date June 2024. Location Frankston 3199, Victoria.

We only install quality systems with a high Australian made content where possible and backed by companies that have a proven history in the hot water industry with great customer support
